Clothes Purging When You’re Transgender: “Why Do I Do It?”

In this video I discuss the act of “purging” one’s gender-affirming clothing, along with tips on how to try to break this damaging cycle. It’s a question I’ve heard oftentimes from my clients, as well as from those who have written in to ask for advice.

Do you have experience with this, as well as advice of your own to share? Please do so in the comments below!

Thank you for this vid. I went through this cycle several times as my wife didn’t understand/approve of my gender affirming clothing. Though to be totally honest I had no explanations, or real understanding for the need for them myself until very recently. You perfectly described the feelings of shame and fear when I was caught multiple times. Some times the purges were instigated by her, other times because I felt I was accruing too many items to keep them hidden. On a couple of occasions I did remove things to other places, so they wouldn’t be in the house. Finally about 18 months ago, she “caved” and let me keep them. I have slowly begun to add other things to my wardrobe, but since I no longer have to fear the “purge”, the sometimes crushing desire to acquire new clothing is so much less now. I know my clothing is safe I can get things later and it will be ok.

Then about 4 months ago our 6 year old child who was assigned male at birth came out and told us she felt that she was really a girl, and had since she started kindergarten. We did not make the same mistake with her, and took her to a counselor to help her work out her identity, and she transitioned a couple of months later. We’re prepared to support her completely.

I found your facebook page, and this website through an Out Support page
