Being Misgendered: My Latest Favorite Way of Speaking Up!

Today I’d like to share with you my latest favorite way to address someone who has accidentally misgendered me. The reason I say it’s my “favorite” is because, so far, this approach has lead to having some amazing conversations! It isn’t something I can EVERY time I’m misgendered, but it’s a start.

Early on I was terrified of misgendering but as time went on I found it depressing, knocking the wind out of me. At some point I realized that it might be better to calmly say something like “please don’t call me sir.” The clerk (cashier, whomever) immediately looks up and more closely at me, realizes her error and apologizes. I’ve even received a couple of hugs!
